Officers Making a Difference in their Communities with AEDs

Helping people has always been at the core of the police mission, and saving lives is the highest form of assistance a law enforcement officer can provide. In combating sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) with automated external defibrillators (AEDs), law enforcement is serving two vital purposes: community service and officer safety.

Community Service: Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in the United States, responsible for over 50 deaths every hour. That is more than the combined deaths from homicide, suicide, drug abuse, and automobile collisions. Universal police adoption and deployment of AEDs could prevent many of the approximately 365,000 SCA deaths annually. Since law enforcement is often first on the scene, and paramedic-staffed ambulances average response times of 10-12 minutes, it is critical that law enforcement be equipped with this life-saving technology to bridge the time gap between collapse and the arrival of EMS. No enforcement-related activity would save as many lives or have such a positive impact on the community as law enforcement use of AEDs.

Officer Safety: Law enforcement officers are among the highest-risk groups for death from sudden cardiac arrest. The risk is especially high during physically and emotionally stressful activities like tactical operations, physical training, and the serving of high-risk warrants. Having law enforcement officers equipped with AEDs can make the difference between life and death. They did just that for Trooper Isaac Lanham of the Pennsylvania State Police who was saved by colleagues using automated external defibrillators.

A portion of Cardiac Science's AED sales is donated to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. The memorial, located in Washington, D.C., honors America's federal, state and local law enforcers. Inscribed on the memorial's walls are the names of more than 15,000 officers who have been killed in the line of duty, dating back to the first known death in 1792.
